Although the law prohibits drivers from leaving the scene of an accident, many drivers still try to escape to avoid liability by running away especially if the incident had resulted in injury or death to another.
This is what happened in the case of a 63-year-old woman who was critically injured in a hit-and-run incident in Lakeside.
According to authorities, the woman was hit while she was crossing Old Highway 80, east of Los Coches Road.
She sustained severe head injury and broken legs.
The vehicle was described by witnesses as a dark-colored Ford Expedition.
The woman’s family will have trouble recovering damages because the unidentified driver fled the area without assisting the victim. Because of this, the driver may face graver punishments once caught as escaping has only worsened the offense he had committed.
